Before you start
Make sure you have all the correct documents on file to support the change or correction of name.
Step 1: Navigate to the Prepare/Change/Correction of Name page.
You access the Prepare Change/Correction of Name page from the Instruments and Roles page.
To open the page, choose 1 of the following:
- Select the Change/Correction of Name hyperlink when the instrument details are collapsed.
- Select the Prepare button when the Change/Correction of Name instrument details are displayed.
- Select the 3-dot menu, to the right of the Change/Correction of Name instrument. Then select Prepare instrument from the 3-dot menu.
Step 2: Select Title mode or Instrument mode.
By default, Title mode is selected for a change or correction of name instrument. Choose the right mode for your change or correction of name.
Use Title mode to prepare a change or correction of name in respect of a registered owner.
Note
Go to Legacy Landonline to use Lease/Mortgage/Other mode to prepare a change or correction of name for a mortgagee, encumbrancee, lessee or other interest holder.
Step 3: Select the Change of Name or Correction of Name toggle.
By default Change of Name is selected. Use this to change the name of a registered owner because of a marriage, reversion to maiden names or change by deed poll.
Or select Correction of Name. Use this to correct the name of a registered owner to:
- correct a spelling error caused by a lodging party or LINZ staff, or
- include an additional middle name which forms part of the registered owner's official name but it was omitted on the register.
Step 4: Select which owner or owners you want to change or correct their name.
Select the checkbox for each registered owner affected by the change or correction of name.
Step 5: Change or correct each selected name.
Select the Update Given Name or Update Family Name fields to change or correct the owner's first or last name.
Or select the Update Corporate Name to change the owner's corporate name.
Add additional details
If you need to change or correct additional details for an owner, such as changing the alias, suffix or birthdate of a minor, select the person icon to the right of the registered owner.
This will open additional fields for editing.
Once you've made the changes you can select the person icon again to collapse the information.
Step 6: Clarify the intent of the change or correction of name, if needed.
Skip this step and go to Step 7 if not required.
Use the Additional Clauses, Conditions or Intent field if you need to clarify the intent of the change or correction of name.
Using this field will cause the instrument to step down to Lodge.
Step 7: Check the Summary to review the instrument details.
The Summary tab will automatically update and display the affected record of title, the affected registered owner (the owner changing or correcting their name) and the applicants.
To check your change or correction of name:

- Check the summary details are correct.
For a full instrument preview select Preview instrument.
Step 8: Save the instrument details.
