The government purchased properties in the Canterbury residential red zone, which included taking over insurance claims for the damaged dwellings and/or land.
The details of the amounts of insurance claims recovered in the financial statements and annual reports of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) and Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) are relatively scarce and also do not distinguish between amounts recovered from the Earthquake Commission versus private insurers.
The OIA release breaks down the figures and includes the final claims received through the CERA and later the LINZ insurance recovery project.
