Consultation is now open for a month on a proposal to correct the spelling of Franz Josef in the names of the village and glacier.
The proposals were made to Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aoteatoa New Zealand Geographic Board by a member of the public.
If successful, the proposals will see the ‘f’ in Josef changed to ‘ph’ to reflect the correct spelling of the name.
The village and glacier have official dual names through the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998 - Franz Josef Glacier/Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere for the glacier and Franz Josef/Waiau for the village.
“The Board agreed that the European part of the name is spelled incorrectly”, says Board Secretary Wendy Shaw.
“Geologist and founder of the Canterbury Museum Julius von Haast named the glacier in 1866 after Kaiser Franz Joseph who was Emperor of Austria at the time. Historical and authoritative sources show the emperor’s name is spelled with a ‘ph’ not an ‘f’.
“Early plans and maps also show the name of the glacier and village spelled with a ‘ph’. However, over time the incorrect spelling, in use since the early 1900s, has become the more common usage.”
“The proposal only affects the European part of the name, not the Māori,” says Ms Shaw.
The Māori part of the name for the glacier is being standardised to Kā Roimata-o-Hinehukatere, meaning the ‘tears of the Avalanche Maiden’.

About Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa
Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board is an independent statutory body. The Board is supported and administered by Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand.
Anyone may propose a name for a geographic feature or place. The Board uses naming guidelines and standards and follows international good practice to help it to make informed, robust and enduring decisions.
The Board recognises the importance of pronunciation in te reo, and macrons support both pronunciation and meaning. Therefore, the Board follows the orthographic conventions of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission).
If the Board doesn't agree with a proposal, it may consult on a different proposal considered to be more appropriate.
The Board consults with relevant agencies, local communities, councils, stakeholders and iwi. It researches all proposals and encourages original Māori place names.
Official place names must be used in all official documents like road signs, maps, websites, databases and publications for tourists.
