Tertiary students with an interest in GIS can now apply for a Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) scholarship to further their geospatial studies in 2025.

Scholarships are available for undergraduate or postgraduate fees for geographic information science (GIS) courses, or for research or other study-related expenses during the period of the scholarship up to a maximum of NZ$5000.

LINZ Head of Location Information Aaron Jordan says the annual GIS scholarships will help build New Zealand’s geospatial workforce and support students with costs at a critical time in their careers.

“LINZ is very pleased to offer these scholarships to recognise the importance of high-value geographic and property information to our economy, environment and society now, and into the future,” Mr Jordan says.

“Geospatial information contributes to a range of sectors. It enables more efficient use of our natural resources, underpins land use planning, environmental stewardship, and enhances the response and recovery to natural disasters. Building New Zealand’s GIS capability will also play an important role in promoting the sustainability of our primary industries.”

LINZ has awarded its external tertiary GIS scholarships since 2018.

Previous postgraduate scholarship recipients have researched:

  • How geospatial information can provide insights to help locate transient people during natural disasters
  • How new digital spatial technologies apply to Mātauranga Māori
  • How the concept of cognitive infocommunications (CogInfoCom) can enhance geospatial interface designs in the workplace.

Previous undergraduate scholarship recipients have been undertaking a variety of study programmes along with GIS courses, including:

  • Resource & Environmental Planning
  • Geography
  • Law
  • Applied Science
  • Data Science

Applications for this year’s external GIS tertiary scholarships are open from 21 October 2024 until 24 November 2024. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of January 2025.
