Demolition of Tuakana Hostel begins

We’re starting work this week to demolish the former Tuakana Hostel on Hospital Terrace, Napier. 

Keeping disruption to a minimum for neighbours, and recycling what we can, will be top of mind for the team during this demolition.

“We were proud to recycle 6,000 tonnes of concrete and metal through our demolition of the Hinepare Nurses’ Home in the same neighbourhood last year,” says Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand Leader Project Delivery Matt Bradley. 

“We’ll be looking to recycle as much as possible in this demolition too. Because this building is mainly timber, the material we will be recycling will be mostly doors, window frames and the native timber flooring.”

Throughout the demolition our contractors will use a range of techniques to help control noise, dust and vibration to minimise disruption to the surrounding residents.  

The Tuakana Hostel was built in the 1930s and was originally part of the wider Napier Hospital complex. Due to its age, the hostel is no longer in a useable condition. 

The hospital closed in 1998, and we demolished the neighbouring Tuakana Annex and Hinepare Nurses’ Home last year. 

We expect work to be completed early next year, with a break for the Christmas and New Year period. 

The hostel, annex and nurses’ home are three of around 900 properties LINZ manages in the Treaty Settlement Landbank. Properties come into the Landbank when a government department decides it no longer needs them and there is a possibility they could be used as either cultural or commercial redress in a Treaty settlement. 

When work is completed, this property will be offered to Mana Ahuriri Trust to purchase on behalf of Ahuriri Hapū.
