Place naming

Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board is proposing to make three “Meyer” place names official in the Waimate District.

This includes:

  • Naming a pass on Meyers Pass Road, Meyer Pass. It is unofficially known as Meyers Pass locally.
  • Changing the unofficial name of Meyers Creek to an official name, Meyer Creek.
  • Approving the unofficial name of a hill in the Campbell Hills, Meyer.

The three features are based in the hills between the towns of Waimate and Kurow in Te Waipounamu South Island.

The names come from the brothers Herbert and Charles Meyer who established Station Peak station in 1855 and ran it together until 1869.

The pass and the creek marked the northeast corner of the early station.

A historic stone church in Waimate was financed by Charles Meyer in memory of his wife Ellen Meyer, who died during an operation in 1878. Charles also died that year, before the church was finished.

Making the names official would mark the family’s association with the area and the names are already well known and used. It would also cement the correct spelling of the family name, Meyer, and ensure its consistent use.

The public can have its say on the names by making submissions for or against here (link)

Consultation closes 31 October 2023.
