Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board announces recent decisions for official place names and invites public submissions on the proposal to officially name Mitiwai Stream.

Open for consultation Mitiwai Stream

Mitiwai Stream is currently one of two recorded names for the stream near Taharoa, that flows from Orangiwhao (hill) southwest four kilometres into the Tasman Sea southwest of Kawhia Harbour. Mana whenua have confirmed that the correct name for the stream should be Mitiwai, which describes how the stream ‘licks’ at the Tasman Sea and becomes part of it. If Mitiwai Stream becomes the stream’s official name, the alternative name Matauwai Stream will no longer be used.

People are invited to make submissions on this proposal until 5 September 2023. You can view more information about this proposal on our consultations page

New official place names

The following place names have now been made official.

  • Te Kakau Bank (from Kaukau Bank). An undersea bank offshore from the southeast coast of the North Island approximately 5km east of land-based Te Kakau Point.
  • Tenahaun Scenic Reserve (from Tenehaun Scenic Reserve). A scenic reserve located on the south Canterbury plains, corrected on advice and evidence from Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai.

Extent amended

The following undersea feature has had its extent amended.

  • Kermadec Trench. Extends northeast from offshore of East Cape to beyond the Kermadec Islands. Its extent has been amended following new data that defines it more accurately.

Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board is an independent statutory body. The Board is supported and administered by Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand.

Anyone may propose a name for a geographic feature or place. The Board uses naming guidelines and standards and follows international good practice to help it to make informed, robust and enduring decisions.

The Board recognises the importance of pronunciation in te reo, and macrons support both pronunciation and meaning. Therefore, the Board follows the orthographic conventions of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission).

If the Board doesn't agree with a proposal, it may consult on a different proposal considered to be more appropriate.

The Board consults with relevant agencies, local communities, councils, stakeholders and iwi. It researches all proposals and encourages original Māori place names.

Official place names must be used in all official documents like road signs, maps, websites, databases and publications for tourists.

Anyone can make a submission on proposed place names, either online or by emailing nzgbsubmissions@linz.govt.nz, or by mailing directly to the the Board’s Secretariat.
