This collection defines the geographic feature types used in New Zealand place names. Generally, a feature type is included as part of a place name such as Mōtītī Island. We encourage using Māori terms for Māori place names where the term is commonly known, for example, maunga, roto or motu.
This resource can be used for education or research, and the terms and definitions can be downloaded as a PDF.
