Protecting personal information
We recognise our obligation to protect the personal information we hold in LINZ Data Service (LDS) from inappropriate release.
We can only give you access to data containing personal information if your request meets the obligations of the Privacy Act 2020 and have a genuine need for personal property owner data in bulk.
You can read more about the principles of the Privacy Act 2020 on the Office of the Privacy Commissioner website - Privacy Act 2020.
Apply for access
Before applying, consider the following data you can access without a need for a data licence:
- property data (without owner information)
- property ownership information via Land Record Search.
Access to personal property owner data in bulk is intended for those who have a need to understand and use this information, e.g. your local council. It is not intended for personal use.
When applying for a data licence, you need to provide acceptable evidence of:
- how you will store, maintain, and protect the data to ensure you meet your compliance obligations of the Privacy Act 2020
- why you require property ownership data in bulk and the intended use.

Licence summary
The LINZ Licence for Personal Data is based on the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0).
If we amend the terms of our licence, we recommend LDS users delete any previously obtained data and download the latest version.
Attribution
You must give appropriate credit to LINZ, e.g. by providing a link to the licence, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests LINZ endorses you or your use.

Privacy protections
As the data provided under the licence contains personal information, you must:
- comply with the Privacy Act 2020 and not cause LINZ to breach its privacy obligations
- take reasonable security safeguards to ensure the data is not misused and is not provided to third parties unless they agree to the licence
- not allow the data to be indexed by any public internet web search engine
- not use the data in unsolicited direct marketing nor in recipient lists provided by you to other parties which are likely to be used for unsolicited direct marketing (see the full licence terms for more information)
- amend or delete the data as required by LINZ (refer to Amendments and deletions)
- comply with all other applicable laws.
In addition, you may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the licence permits.
Amendments and deletions
A condition of the licence is that LINZ can require you to amend or delete the data and ensure that third parties to whom you provided the data do the same.
