In times of great suffering and deprivation soldiers looked to their commanders for inspiration, confidence and leadership by example. WW1 gave rise to some of the greatest army commanders in history – on both sides of the conflict. These place names reflect the esteem in which these leaders were held both by soldiers at war, and the people at home.
