2012
The Madras Street property was designated in the 2012 Christchurch Central Recovery Plan as been needed for the Canterbury Multi-Use Arena (CMUA) anchor project.
2016
We inherited the responsibility for central city land acquisitions from CERA and started engaging with the owners to acquire 212–214 Madras Street by mutual agreement.
Mid-2020
By mid-2020, all other land needed for the CMUA had been acquired.
September 2020
Christchurch City Council’s subsidiary company responsible for the CMUA’s design and delivery – CMUA Project Delivery Limited (CMUAPDL) – advised us that 212–214 Madras Street was urgently required for successful delivery of the arena. We continued to engage with the owners to acquire this land by agreement.
After these efforts were unsuccessful, the Governor-General issued a Proclamation to take the land and the acquisition became the subject of legal action.

Agreement is reached to buy 212–214 Madras Street, providing certainty for this important anchor project to proceed. The agreement reached between the Government and the owners, with the support of Christchurch City Council and CMUAPDL, allows the owners to relocate the NG building to a site south of the Transitional Cathedral..
