Reasons for decision
- Lizard habitat such as manuka, bracken, tussockland and grassland will be reduced through burning. Reducing the availability of preferred habitat to support a healthy lizard population.
- There are five ‘At Risk’ indigenous lizard species (Korero gecko (Woodworthia “Otago-large”), Jewelled gecko (Naultinus gemmeus) and Cryptic skink (Oligosoma inconspicuum), Southern grass skink (Oligosoma polychroma; Clade 5) and Otago green skink (Oligosoma aff. chloronoton “eastern Otago”) found on the Station/s.
- There are significantly large areas of unsurveyed freshwater habitats within the pastoral leases which may contain southern flathead galaxias and koura. Gollum galaxias, Galaxias gollumoides have been recently observed in the lower Dome and may well be present in unsurveyed creeks and wetland habitat within the lease boundary.
- Tussock grassland and shrubland ecosystems that contain diverse native woody and herbaceous plant species provide habitat for a range of invertebrates, lizard and bird species which is at risk from the burning.
