SouthPAN services

SouthPAN early Open Services are available now and are progressively being improved. A certified Safety of Life service will be provided for aviation and other Safety of Life operations from 2028.

Three early Open Services are currently available: L1 SBAS, Dual Frequency Multi-Constellation (DFMC SBAS) and Precise Point Positioning via SouthPAN (PVS).

Accuracy and availability of these services will improve as the system is progressively deployed. SouthPAN will be fully operational in 2028.

L1 SBAS

L1 SBAS provides augmentation of the GPS L1 C/A signal and can be certified for Safety of Life. This service supports improved positioning to ≤3m (95% confidence interval).

Dual Frequency Multi-Constellation (DFMC SBAS)

DFMC provides augmentation of the GPS L1 C/A, GPS L5, Galileo E1 and Galileo E5a signals. DFMC sends corrections for 2 satellite frequencies (L1 and L5) and 2 satellite constellations (GPS and Galileo). This service supports improved positioning to ≤1m (95% confidence interval).

PPP Via SouthPAN (PVS)

PVS is similar to DFMC SBAS in that it augments GPS L1 C/A, GPS L5, Galileo E1 and Galileo E5a signals but provides additional information that allows end users to achieve more accurate position. The PVS Open Service is currently provided on the SouthPAN L5 navigation signal and will be migrated to the new L5b navigation signal in 2027 This service supports improved positioning to ≤0.40m (95% confidence interval).

Coverage area

SouthPAN services are transmitted via geostationary satellite and the internet. They can be received by any compatible GNSS device used outdoors in areas with a clear sky view of the satellite.

The service area for SouthPAN is defined in the map below and the SouthPAN Service Definition Documents. The Signal-in-Space document describes services delivered via satellite navigation signals. The Data Access Services document describes services delivered via the internet.

The L1 SBAS early Open Service is available on and around the mainlands of Australia and New Zealand, represented as blue on the map below.

The DFMC SBAS and PVS early Open Services are available in a wider coastal area around Australia and New Zealand, represented inside the dotted lines on the map.
