Known as the S-100 standard, this digital framework blends together different data formats in real time, synthesising complex information that is critical for maritime decision-making.
As the New Zealand Hydrographic Authority (NZHA), we’re responsible for preparing our region – New Zealand, South-West Pacific and the Ross Sea area of Antarctica – for the rollout of this new Universal Hydrographic Data Model.

To help mariners prepare for this digital future, we’re introducing three new key digital products from 2026. They’re known as the S-101 – Electronic Navigational Charts; S-102 – Bathymetry; and S-104 – Water Level.

We're helping to create a safer, smarter future for marine navigation in New Zealand and around the world.
S-100 products will be gradually phased in across the international maritime community by 2030. These timings align with those set by the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO). It’s in response to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) requirement for new Maritime Services for e-Navigation, and the deadline for S-100 ECDIS systems.
By adopting and implementing S-100, mariners will benefit from real-time information that unlocks opportunities to:
- enhance navigation safety – in open ocean and port environments
- improve efficiency and optimise load capacity for ships
- reduce carbon emissions
- pave the way for autonomous shipping and e-navigation
- use data beyond navigation.
