Commercial property
| People who want to occupy Crown properties for commercial activities will need a lease or licence. The nature of ownership will determine what type of lease or licence is needed. In some cases, the Crown owns the land but not the building, or vice versa. |
Grazing | People can apply to use Crown land for grazing under the Land Act. |
Lakebeds and riverbeds | People who want to do an activity within a Crown-owned lakebed or riverbed will need a licence. Examples of activities are:

Mining | Companies/individuals with a mining permit from NZ Petroleum and Minerals can apply for access to operate on Crown land. |

Section 165 of the Land Act 1948 | Under section 165 of the Land Act 1948 you need a licence to remove gravel and timber from Crown-owned riverbeds. |
Utilities | Utility companies and local government who need to access Crown land to manage and maintain utilities (for example water, sewage, power and telecommunication) need an easement. |
