Over the past five years Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) has partnered with ten regional councils to obtain high-definition data of the shape of New Zealand.

The Provincial Growth Fund LiDAR programme is co-funded by councils and the Kānoa Regional Economic Development and Investment Unit at MBIE.

Data from about 70% of the country is available at the LINZ Data Service, with another 10% to be added over the next few months, completing the project.

The data provides a baseline that is invaluable to councils and regional industries for planning and helps with land management, flood and landslide hazard mapping, engineering design and viewing maps in 3D.

Farmers Weekly share how this LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data is useful for farmers to better understand their land and make decisions based on data they can trust. This data can open up exciting opportunities for New Zealand farmers and growers.
