The New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa has announced decisions from its April hui, including corrections to existing Māori place names and making fifteen undersea feature names official.
The Board has also opened consultation on a proposal to correct the spelling of a small creek in Wainuiomata.
Corrections to 12 official place names
The Board has corrected 12 official Māori place names by adding macrons:
- Ōtamarau
- Rānui Railway Station
- Takatū Point
- Māori Rocks
- Takatū Head
- Ātiu or Middle Island
- Kauri Point Pōnui
- Mount Ōhakiri
- Pōhutukawa Stream
- Ōkura
- Pāremoremo
- Tōtara Vale
Official names confirmed for undersea features within NZ territorial waters
Three existing undersea feature names have been made official.
- Grono Basin (in Doubtful Sound / Patea)
- Kahutara Spur (forms the eastern boundary of Kaikōura Canyon).
- Yates Canyon (on the Fiordland coast).
Official names for undersea features outside NZ territorial waters
The Board has also announced decisions on names for a dozen undersea features beyond New Zealand’s territorial waters.
The following undersea names are now official:
- Adare Sea Channel, in the Southern Ocean.
- Waite Hills, two undersea hills joined by a saddle in the Southern Ocean
- Coquille Seamount, next to the Cook Fracture Zone.
- KOPRI Seamount, east of the Balleny Islands.
- Lower Paritū Basin, offshore from Te Ika-a-Māui.
- Paritū Basin, offshore from Te Ika-a-Māui.
- Paritū Gap, an undersea gap separating North Paritū Ridge from South Paritū Ridge.
- Petrel Spur, a low undersea ridge adjacent to the southeast end of Wanganella Trough.
- Giljanes Seamount, an undersea volcanic seamount on the Kermadec arc, altered from Giljanes Volcano.
- Matahourua Ridge, an undersea ridge on Kupe Abyssal Plain, altered from Matahourua Seamount.
- Parea Guyot, an undersea guyot on the eastern end of Chatham Rise, altered from Chicken Seamount.
- Veryan Valley, an undersea valley on South Chatham Slope, altered from Veryan Channels.
Consultation opens on 'Skerretts Creek' in Wainuiomata
The Board has also opened consultation on a proposal to correct the spelling of a small creek in Wainuiomata. Under the proposal Skerrets Creek would be corrected to Skerretts Creek.
Consultation will run for one month, closing on 23 June 2022.

- Anyone may propose a name for a geographic feature or place. We use naming guidelines, standards, and international good practice for standardised, consistent and accurate naming, to help us make robust and enduring decisions.
- We consult with relevant agencies, local communities, stakeholders and iwi. We research all proposals and where possible encourage the use of original Māori names.
- Once official, place names must be used in all official documents, like road signs, maps, websites and databases.
