The site is a deferred selection property in a Treaty settlement with Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa, and our role is to manage and maintain the property while its future ownership is determined.
After taking over management in 2016 we have overseen the demolition and removal of 14 structures, stockpiles and supporting service tunnels at the site.
The only building remaining is a former nurses’ home, which is listed as a heritage building in the New Plymouth District Council proposed district plan.
The building is earthquake-prone and hazardous, and unauthorised entry is dangerous and not permitted for safety reasons.
