We are governed by the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008 and develop policies, standards and guidelines for place naming. We name places and features in New Zealand and its offshore islands, in Antarctica and on the sea floor. We also alter district or region names and process Crown reserve names, and we are responsible for place names made official through Treaty of Waitangi settlements.
