Consultation opens on proposed place names Ryan Creek, Stewart Crags and Stewart Creek

The New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa has opened public consultation on three proposals for official place names.

The name Ryan Creek is proposed for an unnamed creek in Remutaka Range. It commemorates Daniel Frank Ryan (1883–1935), an employee of the Wellington Water Board. The name is already used locally and making it official will support easier identification in an emergency.

The Board is also considering a proposal to make Stewart Crags–the unofficial name for cliffs near Haast Pass/Tioripatea–official. A nearby creek is also proposed to be officially changed from Stewarts Creek to Stewart Creek.

The crags (cliffs) are roughly 9 kilometres north of Haast Pass/Tioripatea, while the creek is 3 kilometres to the south.

The proposed names remember William Guthrie Stewart (1941 – 1901). Both names are used unofficially, with surveys and maps using variations of the name Stewart Crags dating back to 1886 and Stewarts Creek since the 1920s.

Consultation dates

The Board will consult on all three proposals from Thursday, 8 September, to Thursday, 13 October.

Anyone can make a submission, either online or by emailing nzgbsubmissions@linz.govt.nz.

Once the consultation closes, the Board will consider all submissions and alternative suggestions at its hui on 2 December 2022. We expect final decisions will be announced from December.

151 official place names gazetted

The Board has also gazetted 151 approved official place names.

The majority, 148 names, are in the Gisborne Region. Three more are in the South Island Te Waipounamu. A further five existing official names have been amended to include macrons.

About Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa

• The New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa is an independent statutory body. We are supported and administered by Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand.
• Anyone may propose a name for a geographic feature or place. We use naming guidelines, standards, and international good practice for standardised, consistent, and accurate naming, to help us make robust and enduring decisions.
• The Board recognises the importance of pronunciation in te reo, and macrons support both pronunciation and meaning. Therefore, the Board follows the orthographic conventions created by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (The Māori Language Commission) 
• If the Board doesn't agree to a proposal, it may consult on a different proposal considered more appropriate. 
• We consult with relevant agencies, local communities, stakeholders, and iwi. We research all proposals and encourage the use of original Māori names.
• Once official, place names must be used in all official documents, like road signs, maps, websites, and databases.
