What the decision relates to

Carrying sheep and cattle

Duration of consent

Personal to Holder

Reasons for decision

The Commissioner of Crown Lands grants consent to an exemption to the stock limitation in the lease to allow the leaseholder to carry the following stock:

  • No more than 5,065 stock units (including not more than 400 breeding cows).

The stock exemption is equal to or less than the exemption granted to the former lessee, Mt Albert Station Limited, and the Commissioner is satisfied that the provisions of section 15(4) Crown Pastoral Land Act 1998 have been met.

A review of the stock exemption within a specified period is to ensure that the provisions outlined continue to be appropriate including confirming that the holder retains access to the freehold and Department of Conservation (DOC) grazing lease land that is run in conjunction with the lease.

Conditions of decision

Consent is granted for exemption to the stock limitation subject to the following conditions:

  1. The exemption being a combined stock limit over leasehold and freehold while continuing to be farmed in conjunction with 165 hectares of freehold land on the western side of the Makarora River and 240 hectares of Department of Conservation (DOC) grazing lease at the Albert Burn Delta and Dan’s Flat.
  2. Stock units are to be calculated as follows:
    • Breeding ewes 1.0 stock unit per head,
    • Dry sheep 1.7 stock unit per head,
    • Breeding cows 6.0 stock unit per head,
    • Dry cattle 4.5 stock unit per head.
  3. The exemption from stock limitation may be reviewed within 6 months of the date on which Porowhita Farms Limited becomes the lessee.

The Crown Pastoral Land Act 1998 provides that permission to undertake the activity may still be needed under other enactments.
