New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (NZGD2000)

The New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (NZGD2000) is our official geodetic datum, used to define positions in New Zealand and its offshore islands.

New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (NZGD2000) is the official geodetic datum used in New Zealand. It allows us to relate a 3-dimensional position to a consistent coordinate, in the format latitude (Φ), longitude (λ), and ellipsoidal height (H).

A geodetic datum is a reference system (or set of rules) that defines a how positions are represented. This includes:  

  • a coordinate system 
  • a reference ellipsoid 
  • additional models, if required, such as a deformation model.

NZGD2000 Deformation Model

NZGD2000 was implemented in 1998, replacing the New Zealand Geodetic Datum 1949 (NZGD1949). NZGD2000 is defined in the Standard for New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 LINZS25000.
